CAPÍTULO 2 �Cómo se me ocurrió escribir una ficción sobre el 23 de febrero? ¿Cómo se me ocurrió escribir una novela sobre una neurosis, sobre una paranoia, sobre una novela colectiva? No hay novelista que no haya experimentado alguna vez la sensación presuntuosa de que la realidad le está reclamando una novela, de que no es él quien busca una novela, sino una novela quien lo está buscando a él. Yo la experimenté el 23 de febrero del año 2006. Poco antes de esa fecha un diario italiano me había pedido que contara en un artículo mis recuerdos del golpe de estado.

Añadiré que, a juzgar por las imágenes, la de Suárez no es una temeridad dictada por el instinto sino por la razón: al sonar el primer disparo Suárez está de pie; al sonar el segundo intenta devolver a su escaño al general Gutiérrez Mellado; al sonar el tercero y desatarse el tiroteo se sienta, se arrellana en su escaño y se recuesta en el respaldo aguardando que termine el tiroteo, o que una bala lo mate. Es un gesto moroso, reflexivo; parece un gesto ensayado, y quizá en cierto modo lo fue: quienes frecuentaron a Suárez en aquella época aseguran que llevaba mucho tiempo tratando de prepararse para un final violento, como si una oscura premonición lo acosase (desde hacía varios meses cargaba con una pequeña pistola en el bolsillo; durante el otoño Y el invierno anteriores más de un visitante de la Moncloa le oyó decir: De aquí sólo van a sacarme ganándome en unas elecciones o con los pies por delante); puede ser, pero en cualquier caso no es fácil prepararse para una muerte así, y sobre todo no es fácil no flaquear cuando llega el momento.
