Her hair, normally pulled back in a bun, was down and flowing over her shoulders. She had also changed and her dressing gown gaped open to reveal a long white nightdress. It was the first time that I had consciously been aware of her figure. Although twenty or so years older than me, I would have been a fool to find her unattractive. But this awakening was quickly replaced by my initial impression of her on that first day in her garden. I could not erase it from my mind. This, coupled with my inexperience with women, meant that whatever might have possibly developed at that point was doomed before it started.

From overheard remarks, his knowledge did not seem to impress the expert. I saw Helen Shawcross only a couple of times during the day: at lunch and briefly during the evening. Her manner was professional, but distant. She was, understandably, on the defensive and possibly embarrassed. However, it didn’t stop me from feeling guilty and thinking that somehow it was my fault. After breakfast, I read the scientific paper she had delivered to my room the night before. It was informative and much better written than many of the other tedious publications I had been forced to read in recent weeks.

The prisoners were much younger and their crimes less serious. The warders, though, had been hewn from the same lump of rock as their predecessors. ‘We had gone as far as we could with the first two,’ I was informed. ’ As usual, she was very matter of fact. ‘The prison governor wouldn’t counsel that possibility with the first two but agreed, somewhat reluctantly, to take the chance with these new ones. ’ They, as with their predecessors, were put at their ease and we replicated the initial sessions of reliving both positive and negative experiences.
